Saved by the President

The last time I saw Air Force One, adrenalin rushed through my body like an electromagnetic current! The courage and action displayed by the President was one that made even Al Gore exclaim ‘Hell, he would make a better President than I would’ for actor Harrison Ford.

To bring it to the Now.. In Portugal’s pristine Algarve Beach, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa sprang into action and saved two women. They were dragged by strong currents from another beach to the one where the President was on a work holiday. The kayak had overturned and they themselves were not experienced swimmers so were unable to get back on it. Luckily for them, the President was close by and swam up to them, getting them back to shore safely.

Despite being on UK’s list of Countries requiring quarantine, President Sousa is himself visiting various parts of Portugal in an attempt to bring back tourism. Citing the UK’s list as absurd, Portugal’s foreign affairs minister called it senseless and unfair as the tiny country on the Iberian Peninsula in Southwest Europe has seven times lesser cases than the UK itself.

As for the women, who were rescued by the 71-year-old President, they were only too surprised at their saviour. Move aside David Hasselhorf! President Sousa has proven the adage once again, that age is indeed just a number.

He didn’t have a special private beach to himself but chose to wander amidst his countrymen and aimed to bring back business to his country, that was grappling a crisis due to the coronavirus. It is in Leaders like him that economies run. It is in Leaders like him that our faith in Governments are built. To travel across the country and engage in touristy activities is an act of LEAD BY EXAMPLE. Words are cheap.. Actions are what count. :

To the country that boasts of port wine, beaches, fado, corks and of course football, all I can say is that Lisbon.. here I come!
